Austin man pleads not guilty to discharging firearm

A man arrested after police responded to a call of shots fired on Aug. 14 pleaded not guilty to multiple charges on Monday in Mower County District Court.

Darnell Jones, 27, of Austin is charged with felony reckless discharge of a firearm within a municipality, gross misdemeanor user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm, gross misdemeanor user of a controlled substance in possession of firearm ammunition and petty misdemeanor possession of a small amount of marijuana.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, officers responded to a call of shots fired at 1:14 p.m. on Aug. 14 in the 300 block of Fourth Avenue Southeast.

Police executed a search warrant at Jones’s residence and found a Mossberg .22 semi-automatic rifle with a loaded magazine and a chambered round, 40 grams of marijuana and a box of Federal .22 ammunition.

Jones allegedly told officers he accidentally fired the weapon.

Jones’s pre-trial is scheduled for Jan. 19.
