Austin man in jail after report of shots fired; Police called to 4th Avenue Southeast Monday afternoon

An Austin man, 27, has been arrested after police investigated a report of shots fired at a vehicle on Monday.

Darnell Jones is in Mower County Jail awaiting potential charges of felony reckless discharge of a firearm in a municipality, possession of a small amount of marijuana and prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 300 block of Fourth Avenue Southeast at
1:14 p.m. on Monday.

A witness said that a black male fired a gun from a residence toward a tan or lighter colored Chevy Suburban or Tahoe. A second witness said that an SUV with three black males inside drove past the residence slowly and yelled toward it before driving off eastbound on Fourth Avenue Southeast.

Police executed a search warrant at Jones’ residence and found a Mossberg .22 semi-automatic rifle with a loaded magazine and a chambered round, 40 grams of marijuana and a box of Federal .22 ammunition.

Jones allegedly told officers that he accidentally fired the weapon.

No injuries or property damage has been reported.
