The Austin cross country team had a pair of top five finishers and the boys and the girls teams each held their own at their season opening nine-team invite at Meadow Greens Tuesday.

The Packer boys and girls each finished in fifth place as a team as Henry Hinchcliffe paced the boys with a third place finish and a time of 17:37.6. Brockdon Lawhead took eighth and Raymond Lucero took 12th.

I’m happy with my finish. I was hoping for a better time, but it’s hot out,” Hinchcliffe said. “We have so many people that can push each other and we’ll keep getting better. We had a really nice cheer section for our team too and that was awesome.”

Abby Lewis took fifth with a time of 20:01.8 for the Austin girls, Nadia Vaughn took 15th and Morgan Hose finished 18th. Austin had a small group of runners compared to some of the other competing teams, but Hose said the team was able to rally together.

“It brings us a lot closer and it’s really nice to know that there’s other girls out there running close to your pace. Nadia and I have been training together the past few weeks and it’s really paid off. She goes a lot faster than I do, but I’m better at staying consistent,” Hose said. “I thought we did really well as a team and as a whole. Overall, it felt like a good start to our season.”

Lewis was also pleased with how things got started for Austin.

Everybody’s been working so hard in practice and it’s really paid off,” she said. “All of our times were really good for our first meet. It’s good to see everyone working together and supporting each other.”
