Accused shooter facing felonies

A man arrested on Monday after police responded to a call of shots fired was charged Wednesday in Mower County District Court.

Darnell Jones, 27, of Austin was charged with felony reckless discharging of a firearm in a municipality, gross misdemeanor user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm, gross misdemeanor user of a controlled substance in possession of firearm ammunition and petty misdemeanor possession of a small amount of marijuana.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, officers responded to a call of shots fired at 1:14 p.m. Monday in the 300 block of Fourth Avenue Southeast.

Police executed a search warrant at Jones’s residence and found a Mossberg .22 semi-automatic rifle with a loaded magazine and a chambered round, 40 grams of marijuana and a box of Federal .22 ammunition.

Jones allegedly told officers he accidentally fired the weapon.

Jones is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 28.
