Outdoor fun and inspirational concerts are this weekend’s best bets

The National Wild Turkey Federation will host the 12th annual JAKES/PF Day at the Cedar Valley Conservation Club from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

“The purpose is to get kids outdoors and get them interested in outdoor events,” said Doug Bergemann, treasurer of the Mower County Cedar River Longbeards chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship)/PF Day is a day of shooting events, including archery, trap shooting, .22 rifles, BB and pellet guns. Bergemann said this year’s program is a joint effort with the Mower County Pheasants Forever chapter and that instructors will be there to provide hands-on training.

“It’s a great way to get kids outside,” Bergemann said. “Most kids don’t have access to the equipment or area to do the shooting events.”

The JAKES/PF Day is for kids ages 5 to 17. The event is free and includes lunch, but officials encourage youth to purchase a $10 JAKES membership to help support the program. There will be door prizes for the participants with a special door prize for those that purchase a membership. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children.
