Lyle-Pacelli girls basketball team wins summer showcase Breakdown tournament

Over the past three years, the Lyle-Pacelli girls basketball team has done a lot of winning. But the team still hasn’t won the big one. LP has been motivated this summer and it took a big step when it beat Hayfield 55-39 to win the summer showcase Breakdown tournament in Maple Grove Sunday.

The Breakdown tournament featured eight of the best teams — except defending champ Goodhue, which was absent — in Class A and LP never trailed once as it also beat Hayfield, Sleepy Eye and Ada-Borup.

“It’s a who’s who of basketball in the state and I think it’s a huge building block going into next season,” LP head coach Justin Morris said. “I think the girls grew up a Abby Bollingberg and Kristi Feet both made a lot of winning plays for us.”

The Athletics have seen their fair share of heartbreak as they’ve had their to the last three seasons come to an end in close games against the eventual state champion in Class A. Morris and the With a strong senior class in tow, the Athletics feel this winter could be their best chance at getting at that elusive title.

“This is probably our last elite opportunity with the seniors that we have,” Morris said.
