Judith McDermott, 69 of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, June 17, at Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.

Judy was born Nov. 2, 1947, in Austin, to Doris and John (Mick) McDermott.

Judy grew up in Austin and graduated in 1965 from Pacelli High School. She went to college at the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota.

Judy was a freelance editor for the Austin Daily Herald for 21 years. She then worked at Pearson’s in Owatonna, Minnesota, as a graphic designer until her retirement in 2014.

Judy had many gifts and talents; she designed and made jewelry. Judy was well-known for her beautiful garden and her knowledge on the subject of gardening. She was always generous in sharing her flowers, plants and herbs with others. Her backyard was a beautiful oasis. Judy loved to cook and loved trying different recipes. She was the family historian for both sides of her family. She loved to travel, especially to Rome, Italy, where her brother Michael and his family lived.

Judy had a warm way about her and made everyone feel special. She had a fondness for cats and took in many strays over the years. She was survived by two cats Poppy and Rosie.

A trip to Judy’s home was an adventure. She had an eclectic taste that took you from one thing to another. She loved to tell you the reason behind whatever your eyes were drawn to. She had a large collection of books that covered all topics of interest. Judy is on her next journey and will be missed by all who knew her and loved her. She had the best friends, neighbors, classmates, and loved ones who had such love and concern for her throughout her illness. We her family saw this and appreciate you all more than you will ever know.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Doris and John McDermott; brother, Michael McDermott and his wife Louise; nieces, Eliza Jones and Iris Jones; nephews, Griffith Jones and Alexander Jones; and cousins, Jim McDermott, Caron Jafodzinski, John (Lori) McDermott, Patrick (Erin) Donahoe, Tim (Karen) McDermott, Patrick (Annette) McDermott, Frank (Ann) Korth, Glen (Patti) Cole, John (Katie) Loxtercamp and Leroy (Laurie) Lierman.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at St. Augustine Catholic Church with Father Dale Tupper officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
