A man who was arrested on Sunday after fleeing police and allegedly throwing away drugs hidden in his pocket is facing felony drug charges.

Alvin Leon Chambers, 29, of Austin was charged with felony fourth-degree drug sales, felony fifth-degree drug possession, misdemeanor driving after revocation of his license and misdemeanor fleeing a peace officer by a means other than a motor vehicle in Mower County District Court on Tuesday.

Last year, Chambers was charged with misdemeanor driving after revocation of his license, misdemeanor giving a fictitious name to a peace officer and a petty misdemeanor seat belt violation.

A warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to show up for his court date.

According to the court report, officers were dispatched to the Western Manor Apartments to serve the warrant on Chambers. After searching one of the residences, they received a tip that Chambers was driving a 2000 Mercury Marquis.

An officer spotted Chambers’ vehicle going south on 27th Street Southwest and pulling into the Western Manor Apartment parking lot. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop when Chambers allegedly exited the vehicle and fled. The officer then pursued Chambers on foot.

In the ensuing chase, Chambers fell and allegedly reached into his pocket and threw something out before getting up and running again. The officer subdued Chambers with a Taser and arrested him.

The officer then searched the area where Chambers fell and found six small bags filled with white powder that appeared to be packaged for sale. Tests on the powder came back positive for cocaine. The bags contained about 8 grams total of cocaine.

Chambers is scheduled to appear in court again on July 20.
