Luella ‘Lou’ Benson

Luella “Lou” Benson, 100, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, died Thursday afternoon, April 27, 2017, at Minnehaha Senior Living in Minneapolis.

Luella Ida Hattie Stephan was born May 28, 1916, at home in Mt. Vernon Township, Winona County, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Ida (Brown) Stephan. She attended school in Winona and graduated from Lewiston, Minnesota, High School in 1934. She continued her education at Winona State. On July 8, 1937, Luella was united in marriage to William Duel in the Woodbury Parsonage in St. Paul. The couple had four children (Deanna, Becky, Barb and Bill). William died on Dec. 1, 1951, from Hodgkin’s disease when their youngest child was four. Luella became the bookkeeper at the Golden Dairy and was introduced to Herbert Benson, a widower with six children (Lorie, Hazel, Vern, Ronnie, Sherry and Allan). Luella and Herbert were married on Aug. 10, 1958, and had one child together (Gary). After their marriage, the couple moved to Blooming Prairie. Luella enjoyed sewing, gardening, traveling, including camping trips to the west coast and Canada. They also visited Europe and Norway. Luella made beautiful quilts and was able to make a baby quilt for every grandchild and great-grandchild. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Eastern Star. Herbert died on April 1, 2009.

Survivors include five children, Deanna (Cliff) Peterson of Tempe, Arizona, Rebecca Osborn of Laguna Woods, California, Barbara (Janet) Duel of Phoenix, Arizona, William (Robin) Duel of Minneapolis, and Gary (Denise) Benson of Clarks Grove, Minnesota; four stepchildren, Lorie (Ted) Ciszek of Bullshoal, Arizona, Vernon (Anne) Benson of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Sherry Benson of Minneapolis, and Allan (Melody) Benson of Blooming Prairie; a son-in-law, Jerry Hester of Lakeside, California; 25 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Duel, and husband, Herbert Benson; a stepson, Ronald Benson in 2014; a stepdaughter, Hazel Hester in 2017; a granddaughter Dyann Hester Miller, a great-grandson, Isaiah Ledo; a son-in-law, Phil Osborn and 12 siblings.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 19, 2017, at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. Visitation will start at 9:30 a.m., prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.
