I-90 bridge project begins as others near completion

Traffic on Interstate 90 in northeast Austin will be restricted to single lanes starting Monday as work begins on the 11th Drive Northeast bridge.

The $2.97 million project will start with culvert and underground work scheduled to run from May 15-31, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. During this time, roadwork may cause short temporary closures of 10th Place Northeast and Eighth Avenue Northeast.

The bridge is planned to close around June 2, but MnDOT District 6 Public Affairs Coordinator Mike Dougherty said the ramps will remain open during most of the project.

Bridge demolition is scheduled to be completed between the night of June 2 and the morning of June 5. Interstate 90 traffic that weekend will be routed up the on-ramps and back onto the interstate to avoid the area while the bridge is taken down.

The new bridge will be widened to accommodate two, 12-foot lanes, two, 8-foot shoulders, and a 10-foot sidewalk.

Along with the bridge replacement, work will include paving, grading and shared use trail and drainage improvements.

The bridge is scheduled to be completed in early October.

Work will kick into gear on the 11th Drive bridge as its ending on the Oakland Place Southeast bridge on the south end of East Side Lake. That project is expected to end in late May, and the Interstate 90 flyer bridge to Oakland along East Side Lake will open around the same time.

Lunda Construction is the prime contractor for the project.

The work on the 11th Drive Northeast bridge comes amidst two more bridge projects in Austin: Oakland Place Southeast and Fourth Street Northwest.

Completion of work on the Fourth Street Northwest Bridge, which started on May 8, is scheduled within one and a half to two and a half weeks, weather permitting.

The work to replace culverts has closed the westbound I-90 ramp at Fourth Street and reduced Fourth Street traffic to one lane in each direction.

Elsewhere in Mower County, roadwork continues on Highway 56 in Adams. Crews there are making sanitary sewer, water, lighting, sidewalk and drainage utility replacements as well as landscaping and ADA pedestrian ramp upgrades. The work is part of a 16-mile project running along Highway 56 from Taopi to near Interstate 90.

Work on Highway 56 is scheduled for completion on Oct. 6.
