The Austin City Council plans to vote on a special deer hunt at its 5:30 p.m. Monday meeting.

Recently, several Austin residents complained to council members about a large deer population eating and damaging yards within the city limits, and council members have expressed interest in a special deer hunt.

City Administrator Craig Clark said the deer hunt has drawn a lot of attention from citizens.

“We’re trying to take steps to balance the deer herd which, according to the Department of Natural Resources official at our work session, said Austin has either been on the brink of having a problem or has had a problem for quite some time,” he said. “We’re moving forward with some effort to try to address that and restore some of the natural balance in the habitat.”

Other items on the agenda for the council include approving a plat for proposed dog day care and boarding business All Fur Dogs and giving the Planning and Zoning Department the power to contract for the removal of junk and/or illegally stored vehicles throughout the city.

It will also hold a hearing regarding the revocation of a massage establishment license for Serenity Massage, which was the site of a prostitution sting.

Monday’s 5:30 p.m. meeting will be in the City Council Chamber in the lower level of City Hall with a work session to follow in the conference room.
