Car crash leads to DWI arrest

Elijah George, 18, of Austin was arrested Saturday night for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, officers responded to a call of a vehicle crash at the 300 block of 11th Street Northeast at 9:14 p.m. on Saturday. According to the police report, George had driven his red Saturn into a legally parked vehicle. The Saturn sustained heavy front-end damage and had a torn-off front bumper.

Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol and issued a field sobriety test to George, which he failed.

Gold Cross arrived on the scene to check George for injuries. Officers took George to the Mower County Jail, where he failed a Breathalyzer test. George then complained of jaw and rib pain and was taken by officers to Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Austin, where he was held for evaluation.

George is facing possible charges of gross misdemeanor DWI, underage consumption, driving without insurance and driving without a Minnesota license.
