The Austin softball team was able to rack up 11 hits, but it wasn’t enough as it lost 8-5 to No. 4 seeded Kasson-Mantorville (13-8 overall) in a Section 1AAA tournament opener on the road Wednesday.
The No. 5 Packers (7-14 overall) will now move to the elimination portion of the bracket as they will take on No. 8 Red Wing 4 p.m. Thursday in Todd Park.
Halie Retterath went four-for-four with a double and three RBIs for Austin and freshman Kiley Kusick pitched two and one-thirds of an inning without allowing an earned run in relief.
“We played pretty well and I was really impressed with Kiley,” Austin head coach Al Eckmann said. “She’s only a freshman and we’re really impressed with what she’s been able to do.”
Austin swept the season series from Red Wing and if the Packers can get past the Wingers again, they’ll play another elimination game at 6 p.m. Thursday.
