The Austin ArtWorks Center will be wrapping up its second year of the monthly ArtRocks Jam Session before breaking for the summer on Friday.

“There is usually a good crowd of people, between 40 and 80,” said Kelsey Ritchie, operations manager for the Austin Area Commission of the Arts. “New musicians are coming out of the woodwork almost every month.”

The jam session is hosted by a house band consisting of three members of local band “Ventura Highway” guitarist/vocalist Scott Jasmin, bassist Scott Anderson and drummer Pete Wangen. Musician Peter Jacobs joins them during the jam sessions.

Although the house band allows musicians to play their instruments, musicians are welcome to bring their own instruments, including guitars, basses, horns, sticks, keyboards, washboards, etc. Singers bring themselves and songwriters can bring their songs.

Don’t know how to sing or play an instrument? That’s not a problem. According to Ritchie, visitors are welcome to come and listen to the music.

Ritchie believes this event is a great opportunity for musicians and singers to make connections.

“It is an opportunity to play with musicians that you wouldn’t normally be around,” she said. “You get a mix of different generations feeding off each other’s experiences. We’ve seen a band form from people who consistently attend the jam sessions.”

Although this is the last jam session before summer, the sessions will resume again in September. Check the Austin ArtWorks Center website and Facebook page for scheduling.

Admission is free, however, donations are welcome. For more information, call 507-434-0934.
