Alumni update: Area grads are stepping up for UW-La Crosse softball team

SOFTBALL

Austin grad Sydney Murphy and Hayfield grad Grace Mindrup have both played big roles for the University of Wisconsin La Crosse softball team, which is off to a 26-12 overall start this spring.

Murphy, a sophomore third baseman, was 1-for-4 at the plate when the Eagles beat UW-Stevens Point 3-2 in eight innings April 29 and she was 2-for-3 with a RBI, a run and a walk in a 2-1 win over UW-River Falls April 23.

Mindrup, a freshman first baseman, drew a pair of walks in a 5-1 win over UW-River Falls April 23.

On the season, Mindrup is hitting .342 with 6 doubles, 1 triple, 2 homers and 22 RBIs and Murphy is hitting .288 with 6 doubles and 22 RBIs.

Hayfield grad Dani Wagner was able to create some offense for the University of Minnesota softball team as the Gophers swept Purdue by scores of 8-0, 9-1 and 12-2 over the weekend.

Wagner went 4-for-8 with two runs in the series for the No. 4 ranked Gophers (48-3 overall) and she is now hitting .328 with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 5 homers and 24 RBIs.

Austin grad Shayley Vesel went 1-for-3 with a run for North Iowa Area Community College in a 24-2 loss to Iowa Lakes April 22.

Vesel is hitting .336 with 17 doubles, 7 homers and 54 RBIs on the season for NIACC (10-36 overall).

BASEBALL

Lyle grad Jordan Hart went 3-for-7 with a homer, 3 runs and an RBI for Minnesota State University as the Mavericks wept Upper Iowa by scores of 3-0 and 12-2 April 29.

Hart, a sophomore outfielder, is hitting .348 with 8 doubles, 3 triples, 9 homers and 36 RBIs for the Mavericks (38-7 overall), who have won 10 straight games.

Austin native Steve Serratore went 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs for Kansas State University as the Wildcats (24-20 overall) beat Abilene Christian 14-3 April 30.

Serratore is hitting .260 with 4 doubles, 2 triples, 5 homers and 33 RBIs on the season.

Austin grad Dylan Gasner went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Iowa Central in a 5-3 win over Century April 29.

Gasner, a freshman, is hitting .245 with 1 double, 1 homer and 7 RBIs on the season for Iowa Central (29-16 overall).

Austin grad Nik Gasner picked up a mound win for Central Lakes when it beat Northland 7-5 April 30.

Gasner pitched 7 innings as he allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and 3 earned runs, while striking out 6. Gasner was 1-for-4 at the plate in the win.

Gasner is hitting .294 with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 1 homer and 21 RBIs on the season and he is 2-8 on the mound with a 5.72 ERA for Central Lakes (5-34 overall).

Hayfield grad Cam Rutledge went 2-for-3 for RCTC in a 4-0 loss to Riverland April 30.

Rutledge is hitting .290 with 5 doubles, 1 triple and 11 RBIs on the season for RCTC (16-20 overall).

TRACK AND FIELD

Austin grad Carolyn Hackel finished in sixth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.04 seconds for Minnesota State University at the Lee Krough Invite in St. Peter, Minn. April 15.

Southland grad McKenzie Kirtz took third in the javelin throw with a distance of 104-8 for UW La Crosse at the UW-White Water Invite recently.
