11th Drive NE bridge demolition pushed back a week; Move gives time to finish Oakland Place project

The planned closure and detour of Interstate 90 for the demolition of the $2.97 million 11th Drive Northeast bridge project in Austin is being delayed one week to ensure that the flyover bridge east of the construction zone is open for traffic during the planned work.

The demolition had been scheduled for June 2-5 to remove the existing bridge over I-90 at exit 179. Instead, it is being rescheduled for June 9-12, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The flyover bridge ramp at exit 180A is closed while bridge work on Oakland Place at East Side Lake is nearing completion.

During the demolition, I-90 will be closed Friday evening, June 9 and traffic will be routed up and down the off- and on-ramps of I-90. The work is expected to be done by 5 a.m. on June 12. If work is completed sooner, traffic will be reopened earlier.

Currently motorists are restricted to single-lane traffic in each direction on I-90 at Austin near exit 179.

The new bridge will be widened to accommodate two 12-foot lanes, two 8-foot shoulders and a 10-foot sidewalk. The existing roadway alignment will remain the same. Work on the project includes grading, paving, bridge replacement and shared use trail and drainage improvements. Work began May 15 on the project and should be complete by Oct. 2. Lunda Construction is the prime contractor for the project.
