Police responded to a man backing his vehicle into the “Serve and Protect” bench in front of the Mower County Law Enforcement Center on Monday.

At 3:23 p.m., Joel Vargas, 44, of Austin was taken into custody after allegedly backing his Jeep into the bench, according to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger.

He is facing potential charges of driving while on a controlled substance.

The bench was not damaged.
