Winter storm to leave cold temps behind

A storm system spreading from the northern Plains into the central Great Lakes region is to bringing rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow to the upper Midwest.

The National Weather Service has posted weather advisories and warnings throughout the region into Tuesday, including a winter weather advisory in Mower County until midnight.

Locally, a wintry mix was expected to bring a glaze of ice and snow. But up to a foot of snow was expected in central North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Forecasters say strong winds are likely to make travel hazardous.

Bitter cold temperatures also are forecast to blanket the region, with dangerous wind chills as low as minus 30 degrees expected in North Dakota early Tuesday.

After a high of 22 Tuesday in Austin, temperatures were to drop to minus 2 overnight with wind chill values near 19 below.

Through Friday, highs are expected in just the single digits with lows around 2 to 5 below. Highs will reach the teens by the weekend.
