The Austin boys basketball team overcame an injury to one of its top playmakers when it pulled away in the last five minutes of a 77-64 win over Winona (5-7 overall, 4-6 Big Nine) on the road Friday.

The game was tied at 58-58 when Austin senior Tyler Tupy, who had a career-high 12 points, triggered a 13-0 Packer run by hitting one of his four three-pointers on the night.

Tupy had to step up for Austin in the absence of Both Gach, who sat out most of the second half after being poked in the eye right before the half.

Tate Hebrink had 14 points, four steals and three assists and Oman Oman had 10 points, six rebounds and eight assists for the No. 7 ranked Packers (13-1 overall, 10-1 Big Nine).

“Tyler Tupy was just huge for us tonight. He hit three big threes in the second half,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said. “Oman played well and Tate had a good floor game. We did a lot of good things and the bench played well. It was nice to see guys step up when a guy goes down.”
