The Austin girls played in an overtime game in Mankato for the second time in two weeks and this time they came out on the winning side. After losing at Mankato East in overtime last week, the Packers bounced back and beat Mankato West 60-58 in OT on the road Tuesday.
The Scarlets (8-10 overall, 6-8 Big Nine) tied the game up at 58-58 after hitting two free throws with five seconds left in OT when Austin’s Emily Hegna took the ball the length of the court and found Awenia Nywesh, who scored the game-winning lay-up as time expired.
“I think last week was a really good learning experience for us,” Austin head coach Anna Meyer said. “This week when it happened we were more confident to make plays down the stretch.”
Hegna and Colie Justice each hit a pair of free throws towards the end of regulation, but the Scarlets forced the extra session with a late three-pointer.
Nywesh finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds and she drew four chargers and Elyse Hebrink had eight points and seven assists for the Packers (8-9 overall, 7-7 Big Nine).
Austin scoring: Abby Lewis, 16; Colie Justice, 11; Awenia Nywesh, 10; Emily Hegna, 7; Elyse Hebrink, 8; Rebecca Younis, 6; KieJuana VanZant, 2; free throws: 61 percent (8-for-13)
