Falcons take down Austin girls hockey team

The Austin girls hockey team controlled the puck for a good portion of the game, but it couldn’t make all of its shots count as it lost 5-2 to Faribault in Riverside Arena Saturday.
Austin (5-15 overall, 4-11 Big Nine) held a 37-31 shot advantage, but its only goals came in the second period when Hannah McMasters and Jordyn McCormack each had goals to make a 3-2 game.
“I think we’re getting better,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said. “We’re getting a lot more shots on net right now than we have in the past and we’re starting to skate and find out what we’re capable of. We’re moving the puck a little better. There’s a chance we could [Faribault] in the playoffs in the first round.”
Vesel recently moved Myia Hoium from forward to defense and he likes what she gives the team on the back end along with Lily Holtz, but the Packers had trouble getting started on Saturday. The Falcons (9-8 overall, 8-3 Big Nine) scored a goal in the first minute of the first period and the first minute of the second period. They pushed their lead to 4-2 when Kaylie Burkhartzmeyer found the net early in the third period.
“We made some mistakes today and I think it cost us three goals,” Vesel said. “It’s stuff that we control and it’s too bad it had to hapen.”
The Packers will play four of their last five regular season games on the road.
