The last installment of three roundtable discussions about drug use in Austin will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday at Knowlton Auditorium in Austin High School.
Monday’s meeting, the last of three held this fall, will focus on educating and supporting parents whose children use drugs.
Guest speakers will be Tiffany Hunsley, executive director of Recovery is Happening, a recovery-oriented system of care (ROSC); planning and implementation coordinator for a five-year grant that focuses on reduction in alcohol and drug use; Thor Bergland, Austin High School REACH advisor will be a part, as will three mothers who lost their children to overdoses of heroin. Two others will speak on being in recovery.
In 2015 the Minnesota Department of Health and Human Services reported that 3.8 million people ages 12 and older are misusing prescription pills. Those taking the painkillers can get addicted as quickly as one prescription. Four-fifths of heroin addicts became addicted by first using the prescription pills such as Vicodin, Percocet and Oxycontin.
The sessions are designed to provide information on drug use in the Austin community, said organizer Chris Lukes. She is the founder of Circle of Hope, a support group for families whose members are addicted to drugs.
