Letter: Report sign stealer to police

Published 10:41 am Monday, November 7, 2016

This letter is being addressed to those who feel others do not have the right to voice their opinion on their presidential choice by stealing the political signs in their yard. You and your thieving companions have violated the law more than 60 times in the Austin area alone. Are you proud of yourself and the party you are trying to support by stealing Trump signs? Do you think your actions are funny? Not only have you become thief, a trespasser, one who damages others’ property, but you have also violated the First Amendment right of freedom of expression. Naturally, when you appear in court to explain your actions, you will still maintain your First Amendment rights. Be thankful you live in our wonderful country because in other countries the fingers of thieves are cut off. Be thankful of those veterans who fought for these rights you have.

The intent of this letter to you is this: Change your ways before your actions become more serious. Respect the rights of others, work hard, and if you disagree with the laws, etc, then get involved to change those areas you disagree with. Thieving is not the answer as it only reflects on you and the party you are “trying to help.” This letter is not directed at Democrats, but to all those who have a dislike of either presidential candidate (Trump or Clinton) and feel stealing signs is the answer. You see, this is not about the election and who you support; it is about the constitutional rights of all and the law.

May I appeal to the citizens of Mower County to report to authorities if you know the person whose picture was on the front page of the Austin Daily Herald on October 28, 2016? A much clearer picture can be obtained by going to austindailyherald.com website. If you can accurately identify the person in the picture, please contact Sheriff Amazi. If you are the suspect, I would recommend you turn yourself in to authorities. If you, as the thief, feel this will go away after the elections are over, guess again.
