The Hayfield girls basketball team opened its season with a 60-37 loss at Plainview-Elgin-Millville, the defending Class AA state champion, Saturday.
The Vikings (0-1 overall) led for much of the first half and they trailed 31-30 at the break, but they only scored seven points in the second half.
“The first half went well and we made some shots,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said. “In the second half it was like there was a lid on the basket. They just brought a different level of physicality to the game that we couldn’t match.”
Hayfield scoring: Maggie Streightiff, 14; Carrie Rutlegde, 6; Olivia Matti, 5; Kate Kruger, 5; Sophia Waldner, 4; Emily Sprau, 3; free throws: 55 percent (10-for-18)
