The top-ranked Grand Meadow football team faced a huge test in its final regular season game and it was able to hold off No. 2 ranked Spring Grove (7-1 overall) 47-34 in GM Wednesday.

Christophor Bain racked up 372 yards of offense and four TDs as the Superlarks (8-0 overall) tallied their 44th straight win as a program.

Chase Grinde had 130 receiving yards and three TDs for the Lions.

“Bain played a whale of a game. He had all those yards and he was on Grinde the whole time,” GM head coach Gary Sloan said. “There were multiple times where [Bain] had good coverage and Grinde would make a crazy catch.”

SG pulled to within 40-34 when Cullen Patterson had a 10-yard TD run with 7:58 left in the game. GM, which never trailed in the contest, responded with a drive that went all the way to SG’s eight-yard line with two minutes left. Sloan was content to kick a field goal to ice the game, but Bain broke an eight-yard TD on third down run to secure the win with 1:56 left.

The game was tough on both squads, as neither of them had faced a competitive game earlier in the season.

“Both teams I think were exhausted because with both teams playing about two quarters with their starters for most games,” Sloan said. “There’s going to be some very tired kids tomorrow on both sides. It was a battle.”

GM will likely host Lyle-Pacelli when it opens the Section 1 nine man football tournament 7 p.m. Tuesday.
