The Austin girls soccer team protected its net for much of the night, but one slight mishap proved costly as it lost 1-0 to Mankato West in Art Hass Stadium Thursday.

The Scarlets (3-2 overall, 2-0 Big Nine) took the lead for good when Shelby Lund tipped in a corner kick to make it a 1-0 game with 10:29 left in the first half.

The Packers (2-3 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) were able to muster a couple of late chances, but they couldn’t get on the board. Overall, Austin head coach Jake Levisen was pleased with how his team handled the ball and played defense against Mankato West.

“This is definitely a step forward. We knew they were a pretty dominant team and our ladies came out ready to play. Every player played their position and they challenged the ball,” Levisen said. “This was a true test to show the gains we’ve made so far this quickly in the season. I’m extremely proud of the girls tonight.”

The Packers had three shots on goal and Myia Hoium had 11 saves.
