The Austin boys soccer team picked up its first win over Rochester Lourdes since 2009 when it blanked the Eagles 1-0 in overtime in Rochester Saturday.
Austin senior Abel Gebrikiros scored his third-game winning goal of the season when he took a pass from Mooday Wah and found the back of the net with 2:30 left in the second OT.
Austin (6-1 overall) was coming off its first loss of the season when it fell to Faribault last Tuesday, but the Packers used that loss to fine tune some things over the past few days.
“The guys were definitely ready to play,” Austin head coach Jens Levisen said. “They came out and moved the ball around well. We used the week to work on some things and they came out ready to play the level of soccer they’re capable of playing from the first whistle to the last.”
When Austin beat the Eagles in 2009 it was the Section 1A title game and it clinched the Austin’s only trip to state in school history.
Lourdes (7-1 overall) had outscored its first seven opponents by a combined total of 34-2.
“It was a huge win, but at the same time it will fuel the fire for Lourdes and if we meet them again, they’ll be ready,” Levisen said. “We’ll let the guys enjoy it, but at the same time we’ve got to keep pushing ourselves to get better and better.”
