Mary Jane ‘Jane’ Hudson, 97

Mary Jane “Jane” Hudson, 97, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, at the Hawkeye Care Center-Cresco from complications following a fall that occurred on Friday, Aug. 19, 2016.

Mary Jane Hudson, or “Jane” as she liked to be called, was born in Howard County on Oct. 6, 1918, to William and Mary Ann (Malek) Hyke. One of nine children, the family lived in Lourdes where she attended the Lourdes school. She was especially fond of her Lourdes church and school even though she and her siblings had to walk some distance to attend.

On April 21, 1937, she married Horace “Leeman” Hudson of Cresco. Supporting her husband in every way, they together operated Hudson Plumbing Service for many years.

In addition to being a homemaker and the secretary for their business, Jane’s prime hobby was sewing. She liked to recount that the priest at her Lourdes church and school gave her a sewing machine because she made her own clothes. Later she made her own patterns and created creative outfits for their only daughter.

Jane loved to travel to visit her family, and she was especially proud of her two grandsons and her two great-grandsons. Loving people, she tried to remember their stories and connections; often she found that she was possibly related to them.

Surviving Mary Jane Hudson is one sister, Mrs. Genevieve Hruska Buker of Cresco, and one brother, Charles (Beverly – deceased) Hyke of Waterloo, Iowa; her daughter, Shirley Jane (Dennis) Berglund of Greenwood Village, Colorado; two grandsons, Brad A. Berglund of Greenwood Village, Colorado and Bret L. (Pam) Berglund of Las Vegas, Nevada, and her two great-grandsons, Brock K. Berglund and Brant K. Berglund of San Diego, California.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Horace “Leeman” Hudson; her parents; four brothers, Benjamin (Eleanor) Hyke, Leonard (Mayme) Hyke, William (Alice) Hyke, Jr., and Clem (Elsie) Hyke, and two sisters, Agnes (Albert – Leeman’s brother) Hallman (Michael) Driscoll and Clara (Thomas) McKeown.

Funeral services will be held at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, with visitation one hour preceding the service. Burial will be in the New Oregon Cemetery following the service.
