While Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger estimated Sgt. Jeff McCormack has made more than 1,000 DWI arrests in his career, he can’t quantify those numbers with lives saved and property damage avoided.
Krueger and the Austin City Council recognized McCormack during Monday’s council meeting for his fifth year of being recognized as a DWI Enforcer All Star in Minnesota, as Krueger added McCormack only let the department submit his name for five years.
“I just wanted to recognize McCormack for the fine work he’s doing for the Austin Police Department and our community to keep the streets safe,” Krueger said.
Over the last 15 years — as long as Austin and Mower County have tracked statistics — McCormack has 776 DWI arrests, or 1 in 6 by officers on the police and sheriff’s departments.
He’s averaged 52 DWI arrests a year with 48 in 2015.
Krueger praised McCormack for leading by example on the force.
“He’s a true team player for the department,” Krueger said.
To celebrate those accomplishments, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (DPS-OTS) recognized 40 law enforcement officers, troopers, deputies, and prosecutors as DWI Enforcer All-Stars during the Minnesota Twins pre-game activities at Target Field last Wednesday.
An average day in 2015 consisted of 69 DWI arrests in Minnesota, a crime state and local leaders say is completely preventable.
