The Hayfield softball team continued its hot streak as it moved to within one win of the state tournament when it came up with a 12-2 win in five innings over Randolph in the Section 1A semifinals in Todd Park Wednesday.

Sophomores Maggie Streightiff and Kelly Johnson each knocked in four runs for the Vikings (17-7 overall) as Hayfield jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Hayfield had edged out Randolph 9-7 in the regular season April 18.
“We knew we had to play well against them. We had to hit well, play our game and just get focused on what needed to be done,” Streightiff said. “We’re just taking it one game at a time.”
Hayfield senior pitcher Jackie Sanvick was able to pitch out of a couple of early jams to help the Vikings (17-7 overall) get out to their big lead. Randolph had runners on first and third with one out in the first and the Rockets had the bases loaded with two outs in the second.
“We came ready to play knowing that it could go either way,” Sanvick said. “We wanted to come out swinging and play good defense. I’m completely comfortable with my defense. We usually play well and knock everything down.”
Hayfield head coach Jana Wagner gave credit to her pitcher for getting big outs when she needed to.

“Jackie must’ve been hitting the corners because they were hitting some fly balls,” Wagner said.
Hayfield will seek its second straight trip to the Class A state softball tournament when it plays Wabasha-Kellogg in the Section 1A finals 5 p.m. Thursday in Todd Park. If Hayfield loses the first game to WK, it will have a second game to get to state and if it wins the first game, it will be headed for state.
“There is a little bit of pressure,” Sanvick said. “It’s a big game, but it’s just like any other game and I’ve got to do the same job as always.”
