Lloyd L. Matthes, 85, of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, died peacefully on Monday evening, May 16, 2016, surrounded by his loving family at Prairie Manor Care Center in Blooming Prairie.

He was born January 20, 1931, in Owatonna, Minnesota, the son of Lloyd W. and Agnes (Pirkl) Matthes.  He grew up in the Meriden, Minnesota, area, graduating from Owatonna High School. After graduation, Lloyd attended Mankato Business College. On Dec. 29, 1956, he was united in marriage to Bonnie L. Johnson in Blue Earth. The couple moved to Blooming Prairie in 1964, where Lloyd worked at IMC as a Plant Manager, and for the Minnesota, Department of Transportation for 15 years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie, served with the Blooming Prairie Ambulance crew and was a Mason. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, bird watching, loved to participate in trap shooting and watching all sports. He especially loved his children and grandchildren and the time he could spend with them.

Survivors include his three children, Greg Matthes of Owatonna, Minnesota, Kathy Carlson (Dan Chesky, Jr.) of Northfield, Minnesota, and Patsy (Todd) Thoen of Waltham, Minnesota; three grandchildren,  two great-grandchildren; his brothers, Donald Matthes of Meriden, Minnesota, and Robert Matthes of Lakeville, Minnesota, his sister Darlene (Roger) Rishavy of Rochester, Minnesota, six sisters-in-law, Beverly Dahl of Colorado, Sharon Young of California, Shelia Grussing and Carolyn Sasse of Minnesota, Connie Wetzstein of California and Gayle Steiger of Minnesota; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd W. and Agnes Matthes and his wife Bonnie in 2013.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 23, 2016, at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie with Pastor Charlie Leonard officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. immediately preceding the service at the church. Interment will be in First Lutheran Cemetery.
