Best Bets: Austin is game for a big weekend

The game is on, Austin. The first Austi-Con gaming convention highlights a busy weekend of events that will also include competitive puzzling, electronics recycling and more.
1. Austi-Con Gaming Convention
Friday to Sunday, starting at 8 a.m. each day, Holiday Inn Austin Conference Center
The first Austi-Con Gaming Convention will bring gamers together for a weekend of tabletop gaming. Event is free and open to the public, and the event will include a silent auction with the proceeds going to Autism day camps run through the Hormel Historic Home. 2. Austin’s Puzzling Competition
Saturday, 9 a.m., Holiday Inn Austin Conference Center
Teams of two to four people will compete to complete a 1,000 piece puzzle. Open to the public. Cost is $10 per person, which includes puzzle and refreshments for participating teams. Stop by or call the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau for registration or more information at 507-437-4563.
3. County Electronics Recycling Event
Saturday. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mower County Fairgrounds.
Area residents will get another chance to rid their homes and closets of those old electronics at a minimal costs. Charges range from $2 to $25. Items not accepted: smoke detectors, hazardous waste/broken glass, equipment with PCBs (capacitors), liquids, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and devices containing mercury. 4. Kay Htoe Boe – Karenni Pole Festival
Saturday, 9 a.m. in Knowlton Auditorium, Austin High School
Experience a traditional ceremony and meal with a culture show, dance, music and speech about the history of the Kay Htoe Boe pole. Kay Htoe Boe represents an essential belief in the Karenni culture celebrating the balance of seasons and peace in the world. Open to the public, free admission.
5. Bike Safety Day/YMCA Kids Fest
Sunday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at East Side Lake
This annual event focuses on bike safety for kids and adults, with fun activities and games, and more. Co-sponsored by Vision 2020 Bike/Trail Committee and the Austin YMCA. For more information, call 507-433-1804.
