The No. 3 seeded Lyle-Pacelli baseball team shook off a late charge by No. 6 Southland to move on with a 2-1 win in the Section 1A West quarterfinals in Marcusen Park Thursday.

The Rebels (6-12 overall) were down to their last out as they trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh. Then they put together three straight singles to to get within 2-1 and they had runners on the corners with two outs. That’s when LP senior Daniel Bollingberg came up with his ninth and biggest strikeout of the day to clinch the win and end Southland’s season.

“Us four seniors have been battling for four years and I had never beaten Southland in my high school career,” Bollingberg said. “With them having the tying run on third, it all just kind of built up and getting this win and advancing is a really great feeling.”

LP (16-3 overall) mustered just three hits off of Southland pitcher Chris Webber, but two of them were clutch ones. Braden Kocer dribbled a single up the middle with two outs to give the Athletics a 1-0 lead in the fourth and Bollingberg lined an RBI single to put LP up 2-0 in the fifth.

“He’s one of the best pitchers in the section,” Kocer said. “I had to try and get a fastball. He threw that and I just tried to put the bat on it. Thankfully it squeaked through.”

LP looked to be headed to an shutout win when Southland rallied in the seventh and LP head coach Brock Meyer was quick to credit the Rebels.

“I’ve got to give Southland credit,” Meyer said. “They looked like they had nothing left there at the end and they came back and fought with some younger kids.”

The Rebels started two freshmen and three sophomores against LP and they’ve had other underclassmen who have contributed this spring as well. Southland head coach Scott Retterath said that his team learned some valuable lessons this season.

“This game was kind of our story of the entire year,” Retterath said. “We lost seven or eight games by one run. With only two seniors, our future looks nothing but bright. Our young guys grew up a lot this year.”

LP will now advance to play No. 2 Faribault Bethlehem Academy 10 a.m. at Riverland Community College Saturday. Meyer said there is a chance that Bollingberg could see some more time on the mound in that game.

Bollingberg said the Athletics are a confident group right now.

“We know if we show up and play we have the ability to beat some good teams,” he said. “But if we don’t show up and play, we know anyone can beat us. We want to win and we expect to win.”
