Melvin Herbert Callies, 77, of Austin, Minnesota died Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at his home.

Mel was born Aug. 13, 1938, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Barbara (Zacher) and Herbert Callies. He graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School in 1956. Mel was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth.

On June 1, 1963, he married Judy Erickson. They moved to Austin, Minnesota, in 1970 where Melvin taught in the Austin Public School System for 27 years. Mel enjoyed coaching hockey and girls’ softball during many of those years.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; son, Peter (Laurie); daughter, Cathy Miller (Greg); two grandchildren, Marcus and Megan Miller, who he loved dearly; brother, Herb Callies; sister, Barbara Wicklund; brother, Steve Young (Lauren); as well as a niece and two nephews.

Mel is preceded in death by his parents and stepfather.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Jim Steffes officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday. Military rites will be by American Legion Post No. 91 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1216.

Memorials are preferred to the Gift of Life Transplant House or donor’s choice.
