Shirley Jean Sayles, 87, of Waconia, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at the Lighthouse in Waconia.
Shirley was born on Dec. 23, 1928, in Racine, Wisconsin, the daughter of Frank and Gertrude (Blommel) Deick. Shirley graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1946. On Aug. 12, 1950, Shirley was united in marriage to Leo C. Sayles in Austin. Leo and Shirley lived in Austin raising their children while Leo worked at Hormel Foods. They were active members of St. Edward’s Parish. In 1978, they moved to Alexandria where they owned a hotel and restaurant. Shirley and Leo also lived in St. Cloud, Burnsville, and most recently Waconia. Shirley enjoyed family vacations, camping trips, card games, watching sports and attending all of her grandchildren’s activities.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Leo Sayles; parents Frank and Gertrude Deick; brother Elmer; sisters: Joyce and Florence; grandson Eric.
Shirley is survived by her loving family, children: Patty (Bobby) Wertis of Apple Valley, Jeanne Rysdahl of Tofte, Mary (Stuart) Moore of Keystone, Colorado, Julie (Rich) Christensen of Waconia, Terry (Sheila) Sayles of Champlin, Becky (Kevin) Feddema of Waconia; grandchildren: Caroline, Bobby, Scott, Andy, Bradlee, Carly (Josh), Ted, Camille, Leah, Stacy, Kayla, Derek, Tyler, Kate, Natalie, Julianne; great-granddaughter Eleanor; sister Nancy Quinn; brothers: Gary (Gloria) Deick, Dick (Arlene) Deick; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 41 First Street East, with Father Bennet Tran as celebrant of the mass. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to the mass at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, www.johnsonfh.com.
