A 27-year-old man allegedly greeted a resident, walked past him and proceeded to steal from his apartment Thursday.
Austin police officers responded to the 300 block of South Main Street for a theft at 9:29 a.m. The victim told police he was outside smoking a cigarette when a younger man walked up, greeted him and then entered the apartment, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger.
The victim then flagged down a woman to notify the police.
When police arrived, they questioned the suspect, who said his grandmother had told him to check on the homeowner.
However, police found the suspect with a bag of the victim’s clothing, and was even wearing a pair of the victim’s pants, according to Krueger. He also had numerous bankcards, social security cards and other items belonging to the victim. The suspect also had a crowbar and small pliers with him.
The 27-year-old was arrested and taken into custody, and the case has been forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s Office. As of press time, he had not been officially charged.
