ST. PAUL — A new state office building whose construction was opposed by Minnesota Republicans has opened in St. Paul.

The Star Tribune reports the Minnesota Senate Building hosted several legislative hearings at the end of last week. As of Monday, DFL senators and their staff were mostly moved in, as well as nonpartisan Senate offices including the Senate Sergeant.

Lawmakers and Gov. Mark Dayton approved $90 million for the three-story building at the end of the 2013 session. But Republicans, who opposed the project, have so far refused to move into the space that was set aside for them.

Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, the building’s chief legislative proponent, says the new building will better accommodate the public.

The building features larger hearing rooms and improved accessibility to people with disabilities.
