Betty Mae Engel, 81, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at The Cedars of Austin.

Betty Mae was born July 20, 1934, to Peter and Geraldine (Johnston) Hemmer in Waterloo, Iowa. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Waterloo. In 1952, Betty began her service in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. Following her duty, she returned home and began her career as a bookkeeper. On June 1, 1963, Betty was united in marriage to William John Engel at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterloo. Betty and Bill resided in Mankato and later Faribault before moving to Austin in 1971. Betty continued her work as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Engel Distributing. They later resided in Las Vegas for a few years before returning to Austin. Betty was a long time member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin where she was active in her circle. She was an avid card player, enjoyed crocheting, and loved her annual trips to Las Vegas. She especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren.

Betty is survived by: her daughter Deb (Mike) Petersen of Austin, and her son Tom Engel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; grandchildren: Lauryn Petersen, McKena Petersen, and Josie Engel; brother Don Hemmer of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill on June 9, 2009; sisters: Joy Schmidt and Barbara (Jack) Cooper; brother Ted Hemmer.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Father Dale Tupper officiating. The Engel Family will greet friends on Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Services prearranged and performed by Worlein Funeral Home of Austin. Condolences may be expressed on line at www.worlein.com.
