MnDOT warns of slick conditions ahead of extreme wind chills

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is warning motorists that roads may become slick during the evening commute today after light snow has fallen and is expected to continue in the area.

The cold temperatures won’t help matters much, as road salt is less effective at temperatures below 15 degrees.

After a brief and modest reprieve from the bitter cold this afternoon, Austin will plunge right back to sub zero temperatures tonight.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill advisory for 3 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, but the bitter temperatures should continue through Wednesday morning.

That comes after a weekend that saw a high of 5 degrees on Saturday before temperatures plunged below zero by 3:34 p.m. Saturday and stayed there through Monday.

Temperatures in Austin bottomed out at 18 below zero early this morning, which bested the coldest 2015 temperature of minus 17, according to weather service data.

Wind chills reached minus 24, but winds were calm overnight.

After Monday’s high reached about 8 degrees, gusty northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph were expected to plunge wind chills back to minus 20 to 25 Monday night into Tuesday morning when temperatures reach minus 3.

The weather service is warning temperatures will be cold enough to cause frost bite in as little as 30 seconds to exposed skin.

Tuesday’s high was expected to hover around zero before dropping to minus 10 overnight when 6 to 10 mph southwest winds could again drop wind chills to minus 25.

Wednesday should finally break the cold snap with a high of 17 degrees before Austin hits 27 degrees on Thursday.
