Anna Bertha Charlotte Buske Holst, 102, of Lyle, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home, Austin, Minnesota.

Anna Bertha Charlotte Buske was born on Sept. 15, 1913, in Pocahontas County, Iowa. She was the third of 16 children born to William Buske, Sr. and Ida (Julius) Buske. Anna was baptized, confirmed and married at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, rural Palmer, Iowa.

Anna married Elmer C. Holst on Feb. 25, 1940. They farmed near Clare, Iowa, until moving to Lyle, Minnesota, during a blizzard on March 1, 1950. Anna resided there until she was almost 100 years old.

Being the oldest girl in the family, she has always been a “second” mom to her brothers and sisters. She learned to sew at an early age and became the family seamstress. In these last years, she maintained her love of sewing and needlework by making quilts for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as many quilts for World Relief efforts.

Anna enjoyed farm life, raising poultry and a huge garden. She always maintained that nothing should go to waste. She cooked with the products she raised and was a great cook, receiving special recognition for her bread and apple pies. Anna had been an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Lyle, Minnesota, Woodbury Willing Workers, and the Lyle Senior Citizens group.

Anna is survived by her son, Galen (Jackie) Holst, Lyle, Minnesota; her daughter, Janice Helgeson, Glenville, Minnesota; grandchildren: Lyn (Mark) Meany, Rose Creek, Minnesota, Steven (Kelli) Holst, Albert Lea, Minnesota, Scott (Kim) Holst, Wabasha, Minnesota; step-grandchildren: Dale Attig, Lyle; Dawn (Jarvis) Burgett, Emmons, Minnesota; great-grandchildren: Lizabeth Meany, Seattle, Washington, Laura Meany, Ames, Iowa, Rachel Meany, Rose Creek, Minnesota, Rylee, Nicholas and Jenna Holst, Wabasha, Minnesota, Paige and Parker Boyum, Phoebe Holst, Albert Lea, Minnesota; step-great-grandchildren: Joshua Attig, Freeborn, Minnesota, Ethan, Isaac and Avaya Burgett, Emmons, Minnesota; and a great-great-granddaughter, Sadie Holst, Wabasha, Minnesota; siblings: Richard (Beverly) Buske, Luella (Lee Phillips) Ruby, Darlene (Roy)Thompson, FT Dodge, Iowa, and Ervin (JoAnn) Buske, Gowrie, Iowa; and a sister-in-law Luella Hett, FT Dodge, Iowa; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer in 1973; daughter-in-law Dorinda (Pahl) Holst; sons-in-law: Roy E Moench and Glen (Stub) Helgeson; her parents; six brothers: William Jr., Gerhard, Henry, Frederick, Earl and Arthur; and five sisters: Anna Louise, Edna, Irene, Ida, and Margie.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle with Chaplain Elizabeth Endicott officiating. Visitation will be at the church from11: a.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at Woodbury Cemetery immediately following the service. Memorials may be directed to donor choice.
