SUPERIOR, Wis. — The mayor of Superior has agreed to meet with members of the Muslim community upset by his Facebook comments about President Barack Obama.
Mayor Bruce Hagen drew protests when he posted that Obama is a Muslim who has “destroyed the fabric of democracy.”
Hagen said that he is cutting short his holiday vacation and flying back for a community meal planned Saturday by the Islamic Center of the Twin Ports.
The group planned the event in response to the mayor’s Facebook comments.
Group president Ibrahim Al-Qudah says he hopes sitting down for a meal together will create understanding for both the mayor and the Muslim community.
Hagen has resisted calls for him to resign over his comments. Several City Council members also are expected to attend the event.
