The Austin gymnastics team put up a season’s best score when it beat Red Wing 139.55-121.85 in the YMCA Thursday.
The Packers took the top three spots in all four events as Maddie Mullnebach took first in all-around, floor, beam and bars and Jennifer Boyle took second in all-around and first in vault.
“Maddie had a real good night and she’s been hitting it real well. She’s a real tough competitor,” Austin head coach Nikki Lindberg said. “We saw improvement on bars and we had a little less falls on beam. We still have to work on having less falls on beam, but overall I thought we did a good job.”
Mullenbach scored at least a 9.2 on all four of her events and she finished with an all-around score of 37.65. Mullnebach’s best score came on the floor, where she had a 9.55.
“You can always do better,” Mullenbach said. “You can get those few tenths of a point to help out your all around score. That’s the main goal.”
The Packers are adjusting to a new head coach in Lindberg and some of the gymnasts are being asked to take on bigger leadership roles this season. Mullenbach said the team is using early meets to build up skills and they’ll look to add new skills later in the season.
“It’s fun to come back each year and build up,” Mullenbach said. “We’ve had some changes, but we’ve worked around them and made ourselves strong like we were before. We’re working towards our 140 goal. We’re getting there.”
