Marlis Irene Buland, 84, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday afternoon, Nov. 6, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Health System – Austin.
She was born Jan. 11, 1931, in Sargeant, Minnesota, the daughter of Louis and Ileta (VanRiper) Meier. Marlis attended school in Brownsdale, Minnesota, and graduated from Austin High School in 1948. On June 10, 1949, Marlis was united in marriage to LeRoy Arnold Buland in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The couple made their home throughout the Midwest, including Austin, Des Moines, Iowa, Fremont, Nebraska and Ottumwa, Iowa. After their retirement, the couple lived for six years in Loudon, Tennessee, before returning to Austin. Marlis enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, LeRoy Buland of Austin; two sons: Rod (Ann) Buland of Livonia, Michigan, and Mike (Kathy) Buland of Noblesville, Indiana; three grandchildren: Justin (Elisabeth) Buland, Lauren (Travis) Brinkman, and Erik Buland; a great-granddaughter, Kolby Brinkman; one brother, Merrill (Bonnie) Meier of Austin; two sisters: Mary Lou (Duane, “Dutch”) Maxfield of Austin, and Donna Lane of Fremont, Nebraska; also many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Shirley Meier.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Austin with the Rev. Karen Behling officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at the Worlein Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Interment will take place at a later date in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Preston, Minnesota.
