GM beats Underwood 34-20 for 3rd straight state title

MINNEAPOLIS — The Grand Meadow football team has won its third straight Class 9-Man state title.
The Grand Meadow Superlarks defeated the Underwood Rockets 34-20 Friday at TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis.
“Everybody’s been talking to me about three in a row,” GM head coach Gary Sloan said. “It’s a pretty amazing accomplishment, and it’s something I wouldn’t never seen coming a couple of years ago.”
Grand Meadow has now won 36 straight games.
Despite pulling away in the fourth quarter, Grand Meadow and Underwood exchanged scores for much of the game and were tied 14-14 at half time.
GM jumped out to an early lead when QB Michael Stejskal connected with Christophor Bain for a 38-yard touchdown on fourth and 11.
Underwood evened the score later in the first on a 14-yard TD run and later jumped out to a 14-7 lead on a 21-yard screen pass on fourth and 10.
After an interception, GM evened the score at 14 on a 41-yard TD catch by Bain.
Early in the second half, Underwood drove to 1-yard line before fumbling. GM recovered the ball.
Underwood took a 20-14 lead later in the second half.
Grand Meadow went up 21-20 scored on a 10-yard touchdown by Zach Myhre with 50 seconds left in the third quarter.
Stejskal threw a 14-yard TD pass to Terrell Rieken to extend GM’s lead to 28-20 with 3:52 left in the fourth quarter.
After a turnover, Stejskal scored a 79-yard TD to put GM up 34-20 late in the fourth quarter.
