AITKIN — Authorities say a man charged with kidnapping and terrorizing his wife was not under arrest when he grabbed a deputy’s gun and fatally shot him at a Minnesota hospital.

Danny Hammond was not in handcuffs Sunday when he killed Deputy Steven Sandberg in St. Cloud. Hammond died after he was subdued with a stun gun.

Aitkin County Sheriff Scott Turner says authorities had planned to arrest Hammond when he was released from the hospital. He was charged six days earlier with numerous felonies after his wife said he threatened to kill her and wouldn’t let her leave their home.

Authorities say Hammond was airlifted to the hospital after he tried to kill himself. Turner told the St. Cloud Times that a suspect’s need for treatment takes priority over an arrest.
