Mayo Clinic Health System locations in Austin and Albert Lea offer many options for annual breast cancer screenings, including new and advanced technologies previously unavailable in the area.
Mayo Clinic Health System and the American Cancer Society recommend that women begin annual mammogram screenings at age 40. Mammography is an X-ray image of the breast that can detect abnormalities and is the most effective exam for early detection of breast cancer. Both locations offer digital mammography, which produces clearer images and reduces X-ray exposure, and ultrasound breast imaging technology. Ultrasound breast imaging allows technicians to examine in greater detail any areas of concern found on the digital mammogram.
Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin offers screenings from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea offers screening from 7:20 a.m. to 4:40 p.m., Monday through Friday. A new MRI in Albert Lea offers advanced screening options close to home for women with a higher risk of developing breast cancer or with areas of concern on digital mammograms.
“This new technology allows us to provide additional screening options closer to home,” Hannah Brandts, M.D., radiologist on the Albert Lea campus, said in a press release. “A variety of options in Albert Lea and Austin makes it easier for women to take charge of their breast health.”
