Area cyclists will have to wait a little longer to pedal from Rose Creek to Austin on the Shooting Star Trail.

Work to extend the Shooting Star Trail from Rose Creek to Austin is expected to now happen next spring after it was originally planned for this construction season.

The 2014 state bonding bill included $2.16 million to extend the Shooting Star Trail from Rose Creek to Austin.

The trail is slated leave Rose Creek and run along State Highway 56 before jutting west as a bike lane on County Road 58 and then turning north on 28th Street to connect to Austin near the Austin Country Club.

A trail bridge is being completed in the park in Rose Creek. Mower County Public Works Director Mike Hanson said plans for the Highway 56 portion of the trail have been submitted for review to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Once the trail reaches Austin, it would be about 20 miles long. A long-term goal is giving bicyclists the ability to ride from Albert Lea to the Mississippi River.
