MINNEAPOLIS — Authorities say a North Shore native was extremely drunk when he drove the wrong way and crashed into another car, killing himself and the other driver on the highway between Duluth and Two Harbors.

The State Patrol says 63-year-old Philip Bergerson — a retiree who relocated to Florida from Two Harbors — had a blood alcohol level of 0.41 percent July 11, when he crossed Highway 61 and hit a car driven by 20-year-old Cole Drechsler, of Cloquet, about 20 miles northeast of Duluth.

The Star Tribune reports that Bergeron was more than five times over the legal limit.

Drechsler was a student at the College of St. Scholastica. A passenger in his car survived.

Bergerson, a former Minnesota Power employee, was living in Bonita Springs, Florida, and had a cabin in northeastern Minnesota.
