There was good news and bad news for the Austin football team Friday.

The good news was that the Packers had their best offensive game of the season. The bad news was that Austin had its worst defensive game of the season.

Owatonna (4-1 overall) amassed 658 yards of offense as Sam Hylie ran for an OHS record 320 yards and seven TDs. The Packers (0-5 overall) had a season’s best 41 points in the loss.

“Offensively we did some good things. We started blocking a lot better and I’m happy with the progress on offense,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said. “Special teams I thought we played a pretty good game and I’m happy with that. Defensively, I really don’t know what happened there because defense has been our strong point.”

Austin started out with a pair of big plays as Jakob Crouch had 54-yard TD run on Austin’s second play from scrimmage and Brandon Edgar had a 52-yard TD run that pulled the Packers within 14-13 with 5:35 left in the first quarter.

Austin’s next two drives stalled out as the Packers couldn’t convert a fourth and one from their own 43-yard line on their third possession of the game, and Austin was stopped on a fake punt on its own 30-yard line on its fourth possession.

The Packers made their lone defensive stop of the game when Nate Conner picked off a pass with just over a minute left in the first half. Austin trailed 35-20 at the time, and it nearly pulled to within one score at the break, when Crouch threw pass that sailed just out of Jason Stoulil’s reach on fourth and goal.

Crouch threw for 248 yards and two TDs and he ran for 75 yards and two TDs in the loss.

The Packers will now look to get going when they play at Mankato East 7 p.m. Friday.

“We did some good things and we got better in some areas,” Vesel said. “We’ve got to put it all together.”
