Although they had their three-game winning streak snapped, the Packer girls soccer team walked away from Tuesday’s loss to Rochester Mayo feeling a little more confident.

Austin lost 2-0 to the Spartans (5-1 overall, 4-0 Big Nine), who had won their previous three conference matches by a combined score of 17-0.
Mayo, which had a strong wind at its back in the first frame, took a quick 2-0 lead near the end of the first half when Kayley Josephs and Hannah Stelley each found the back of the net in a five-minute stretch. Austin keeper Chloe Summerfield kept the Packers (4-3 overall, 2-2 Big Nine) in the match as she made 12 of her 21 saves in the first half.
“We came in kind of intimidated because we knew how good they are. The first half we were timid, but we had a lot better second half. That gives us confidence for playing teams like this in the future,” Summerfield said. “It’s weird, but I kind of like a lot of shots because the momentum picks up and I just want to go for it.”
Austin played better with it’s wind in the back in the second half and it almost got on the scoreboard when Isabelle Leuer had a breakaway shot stopped halfway through the frame.
Austin head coach Enrique Camerena-Corzo said he remembers when the Packers used to lose games to Mayo by double-digits a few years back.
“I think Mayo was surprised that they only scored two goals,” Camarena-Corzo said. “In the second half the girls realized that they can play with any team. This is the best team we’ve seen so far. I’m really proud of the girls in the second half.”
